Long Strings and Chiral Non-Singlets in Matrix Quantum Mechanics

چکیده

We study the non-singlet sectors of Matrix Quantum Mechanics in application to two-dimensional string theory. We use the chiral formalism, which operates directly with incoming and outgoing asymptotic states, related by a scattering operator. We argue that a general non-singlet scattering amplitude decomposes into scattering amplitudes in the adjoint. In the adjoint representation, we express the phase of the tree-level scattering amplitude as an integral over the Fermi sea. We claim that this expression holds for any, in general time-dependent, profile of the Fermi sea. In the case of stationary Fermi sea our formula reproduces Maldacena's scattering amplitude for a long string to go in and come back to infinity.

Long strings in two dimensional string theory and non-singlets in the matrix model

We consider two dimensional string backgrounds. We discuss the physics of long strings that come from infinity. These are related to non-singlets in the dual matrix model description. The main motivation for this paper is to get some insights about the Lorentzian physics of the two dimensional black hole [1]. A proposal for the matrix model dual of the Euclidean black hole was made by Kazakov, ...

0 M ay 1 99 8 A Lie Algebra for Closed Strings , Spin Chains and Gauge Theories

We consider quantum dynamical systems whose degrees of freedom are described by N × N matrices, in the planar limit N → ∞. Examples are gauge theories and the M(atrix)-theory of strings. States invariant under U(N) are 'closed strings', modelled by traces of products of matrices. We have discovered that the U(N)-invariant operators acting on both open and closed string states form a remarkable ...

Implications of String Constraints for Exotic Matter and Z ′ s Beyond the Standard Model

Global consistency of string compactifications places constraints on the chiral matter spectrum of a gauge theory which include those necessary for the absence of cubic nonabelian anomalies, but also contain some additional conditions. In the class of theories we study, some of these are present in a field theory augmented by anomalous U(1)’s and Chern-Simons terms, but some are genuinely not p...

observed and to be observed

Linear defects are generic in continuous media. In quantum systems they appear as topological line defects which are associated with a circulating persistent current. In relativistic quantum vacuum they are known as cosmic strings, in superconductors as quantized flux lines, and in superfluids and low-density atomic Bose-Einstein condensates as quantized vortex lines. We discuss unconventional ...

Non - Critical String Duals of N = 1 Quiver Theories

We construct N =1 non-critical strings in four dimensions dual to strongly coupled N=1 quiver gauge theories in the Coulomb phase, generalizing the string duals of Argyres-Douglas superconformal fixed points in N=2 gauge theories. They are the first examples of superstring vacua with an exact worldsheet description dual to chiral N=1 theories. We identify the dual of the non-critical superstrin...
